Nick has 35 years’ service in the railway industry, starting as an apprentice mechanical and electrical engineer at the age of 16. Nick is a Chartered Civil Engineer, a Chartered Project Manager and a Chartered Permanent Way Engineer. He is also a Fellow of both the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Permanent Way Institution, also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Nick has undertaken a number of roles at all levels in asset management, projects, maintenance and operations up to Infrastructure Projects Director and Route Infrastructure Maintenance Director. Nick recently led the Network Rail Safety Task Force, which focused on modernising our approach to maintaining our railway in a conscious effort to significantly reduce the risk of track workers being struck by a train. Since June 2022, Nick has taken the role of Route Director for the Wales and Borders Route and has driven the performance recovery of both passenger and freight services, as well as the alignment with ‘Transport for Wales’ as they continue to transform railway services across the railway in the Wales and Borders Route
